CRIJ 2513 - Criminal Law and Procedure This course reviews the historical development of criminal law and its use by the criminal justice system. We will deal with substantive criminal law, that is, the part of law which defines criminal acts and determines whether or not particular persons accused of crimes are indeed guilty. We will examine the common law origins of the elements of the criminal law and its contemporary forms. Emphasis is placed on the evaluation of an offense and the elements that need to be presented for case preparation from initial contact to the conclusion of the trial.
